I recently added an application server to a SharePoint 2010 farm and was receiving these two errors every minute.

• Session "WSSUSAGESESSION14" failed to start with the following error: 0xC0000022

• Session "WSSTRACESESSION14" failed to start with the following error: 0xC0000022

As a result, I also found that SharePoint’s log files were completely empty, but only on this application server.  After a bit of Internet research, nothing led to me a detailed solution, though several posts out there mentioned a permissions issue.  I started by comparing the local security groups on my working-properly web front end server with the local security groups on the newly added application server and found one major discrepancy.

The “Performance Log Users” security group was empty on the application server, while it was populated with users on my web front end server.  After adding the appropriate users to make the two servers match identically and rebooting my application server, these errors ceased to occur.
